Tyn Y Coed Cottage

Located in the rural countryside in Brecon Beacons national park is the 300 year old Tyn Y Coed Cottage (House in the Woods). This charming Grade II listed cottage is the perfect escape from city life for families, friends or couples featuring three bedrooms, a luxury hot tub and lovely log fire.

Around 40 miles north from centre of Cardiff and minutes from the beautiful Brecon town, I stayed here on Monday to produce a promotional video of the cottage with Miss Nicklin.

On our arrival we excitedly explored the grounds of the property. That wonderful olde worlde scent from the log burner tickled my nostrils as I stepped inside the country kitchen.

This characterful space comes with all the mod cons for easy 21st century living (after all it’s a holiday) with a fridge, freezer, dish washer, range cooker and all the kitchenware and cutlery you could ask for.

After a long drive we were excited to tuck into goodies from the welcome hamper – the welsh cakes went down a treat with a cup of tea!

The living area is also full of period features with dark wood furniture, patterned carpets and french doors opening onto the front garden picnic table.

Even though it’s lovely to switch off and enjoy the simple things in life when somewhere like this, wifi and TV with a full sky package (sports and movies) is provided, as well as a great selection of board games, children’s toys, books and DVDs.

Up the narrow stone spiral staircase we first spotted a twin room to our left, stylish shower room straight ahead and a super king bedroom and kingsize room beyond this.

For a 300 year old property it’s surprisingly airy with light walls, high ceilings and beautiful wood beaming throughout.

The last bedroom has it’s own en-suite and each room has their own TV and unique view of the surrounding countryside. I thought the bed was one of the comfiest I’ve rested in, great will power was required to remove myself from underneath the thick duvet on what was a very cool spring morning.

The garden area is very secluded with spaces to keep both young and old entertained. We’re both young at heart and resisted the trampoline and tree swing for some extra time in the hot tub. It turned out to be a calm and clear starry night – very ideal! There’s also no street lights in the area or neighbours, perfect for stargazing and night photography.

For keen walkers Tyn y Coed cottage is perfectly positioned at the top of the national park with reservoirs, ancient monuments and historical hamlets to explore. Pen-y-fan, the highest mountain in Southern Britain is only twenty minutes away and Dan yr Ogof caves, Craig Y Nos Castle and the Waterfall Country is also on its doorstep (see my post of this area by clicking here).

The owners have supplied a helpful book containing information about local attractions in the area, pubs, restaurants and instructions to use the log fire and hot tub.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our time at the cottage and were won over by it’s charm and rural location. It’s quite different to anywhere I’ve stayed before and quickly drew attention from a few folk following my new Snapchat and Instagram (@explorewithed).
